America East Men's Lacrosse 2027 Season Preview: Can Anyone Catch UAlbany?

UAlbany is chasing a fourth straight America East title in 2027, but the league's biggest storyline is Vermont's transfer-portal losses. Here's a program-by-program look at all eight teams entering the season.

For the third consecutive May, the America East men's lacrosse trophy ended up in Albany. Head coach Scott Marr's Great Danes rallied past Vermont to claim the 2026 conference crown, cementing the league's clearest modern dynasty and turning every 2027 conversation into the same question: can anyone knock UAlbany off the podium?

With eight programs spread from Burlington to Baltimore, the America East once again sends only its top four regular-season finishers to the conference tournament. Here is a program-by-program look at where each stands entering the 2027 season.

The Defending Champions

UAlbany Great Danes

Three straight America East banners have made UAlbany the standard. The Great Danes ran the 2026 regular-season table at 6-0 to grab the No. 1 seed, then thumped UMBC 14-3 in the semifinal before outlasting Vermont for the title. Under longtime head coach Scott Marr, Albany has become the league's measuring stick — and the chase to catch them is the conference's central storyline in 2027.

The Contenders

Vermont Catamounts

Vermont reached the 2026 America East final, but the offseason delivered a gut punch. The Catamounts' two biggest stars — attackman Max Frattaroli, who totaled 31 goals in 2026, and three-time All-America East first-team long-stick midfielder Jack Combs — both entered the transfer portal and landed at Rutgers. Replacing that production — Frattaroli's scoring and Combs' wing defense — is now the defining question of head coach Chris Feifs' 2027 season. Burlington still has the culture and the 4-2 conference pedigree, but the path back to the title game runs through a rebuilt roster.

Bryant Bulldogs

Bryant's transition into America East play has been a success. The Bulldogs earned the No. 2 seed in 2026 with a 4-2 league mark and continue to play a physical, tournament-ready style under head coach Brad Ross. After a semifinal exit to Vermont, Bryant will look to turn regular-season consistency into a championship-game breakthrough in 2027.

UMBC Retrievers

UMBC tied Bryant and Vermont at 4-2 to grab a tournament slot, and the Retrievers' semifinal run showed they belong in the league's upper tier. Head coach Ryan Moran has the program trending up, and with a returning core that knows what it takes to reach the conference's final four, UMBC is a threat to crash the title game in 2027.

Chasing the Field

Binghamton Bearcats

Binghamton is chasing a tournament berth under head coach Kevin McKeown, building around a developing roster in upstate New York. The Bearcats' path in 2027 is clear: climb out of the bottom four and steal one of the conference's playoff spots.

Stony Brook Seawolves

Stony Brook has the resources and Long Island recruiting base to contend in any given year. Head coach Anthony Gilardi continues to reshape the Seawolves' identity, and 2027 will be about turning close conference losses into the wins needed to crash the tournament field.

UMass Lowell River Hawks

UMass Lowell, led by head coach Drew Kelleher, has been building patiently since joining the conference. The River Hawks' focus entering 2027 is sustained competitiveness in a league where the margin between the fourth and fifth seeds is often a single game.

NJIT Highlanders

NJIT remains the conference's youngest men's lacrosse program, and head coach Eric Wolf continues to develop the Highlanders against a demanding America East schedule. Progress in 2027 will be measured in roster growth and tighter conference results.

What to Watch in 2027

  • The three-peat chase. UAlbany is chasing a fourth straight America East title — a run that would put the Great Danes in rare company nationally.
  • Vermont's rebuild. The Catamounts reached the 2026 final but lost Frattaroli and Combs to Rutgers — can Chris Feifs replace his two cornerstone players and keep Vermont in the title hunt?
  • The 4-2 logjam. Bryant, Vermont, and UMBC all finished 4-2 in 2026; how that trio reorders itself — now without Vermont's portal departures — will decide tournament seeding.
  • The bottom four. Binghamton, Stony Brook, UMass Lowell, and NJIT are all within striking distance of the playoff cut line, making midseason upsets the league's great equalizer.
