SMU has landed the first roster commitment in the history of its new men's lacrosse program, with Villanova long-stick midfielder Jake Melchionni set to join the Mustangs as a graduate transfer. Inside Lacrosse listed Melchionni as an incoming transfer to SMU in its 2027 Division I transfer portal tracker, giving head coach Jim Mitchell an immediate cornerstone as the Mustangs build toward their spring 2028 debut.

The addition carries significance well beyond a first name on the board. SMU is creating Texas' first NCAA Division I men's lacrosse program and will enter the ACC in 2028. For a program beginning from the ground up, Melchionni brings a rare combination of proven production, national recognition and experience playing against high-level Division I competition.

Melchionni, a 6-foot-1, 170-pound LSM from Bernardsville, New Jersey, arrives after an accomplished run at Villanova. In 2026, he was named BIG EAST Specialist of the Year and earned a unanimous First Team All-BIG EAST selection. He also collected Third Team All-America recognition from USA Lacrosse, Nike Lacrosse Media and the USILA, while appearing on the Tewaaraton Award watch list.

His impact was measurable across the field. During his 2026 junior season, Melchionni led Villanova with 32 caused turnovers and 67 ground balls, a disruptive profile that made him one of the nation's most productive specialists. Villanova noted that his caused-turnover rate ranked sixth nationally, and he finished the season with five BIG EAST weekly honors. He previously became the first player in Villanova history to earn BIG EAST Specialist of the Year in 2025.

For Mitchell, who was appointed SMU's first men's lacrosse head coach on October 28, the commitment is an early signal of the level of player the Mustangs expect to attract. The former Princeton offensive coordinator takes over a program backed by a rapidly advancing fundraising effort and a clear ambition to compete immediately when it begins play.

Melchionni's experience should offer value well beyond the stat sheet. A veteran pole with the ability to create turnovers, cover ground and help set a defensive standard is exactly the type of presence a first-year program needs as it establishes its identity. His commitment gives SMU a player with both the resume and the profile to be one of the early faces of lacrosse on the Hilltop.

What It Means SMU's first graduate-transfer commitment is a meaningful early win in the construction of a program that will take the field in 2028. With Melchionni, the Mustangs have added an established All-American LSM and a defensive playmaker whose experience can help set the tone for the program's first roster.
